Mr. Robert Caldwell, affectionately known as “Bob”, was born in Newberry County, South Carolina, on June 1, 1932, the son of the late Sammie Caldwell, Sr. and Marie Sondley Caldwell Williams. Robert was the 6th son and 8th child. He departed this earthly life on Sunday, December 18, 2016, at White Oak Manor-Newberry, SC.
His early education was at Fairview (Rutherford) School, 1st-7th grade. He considered himself to be an average student. After getting what Rutherford had to offer, he was enrolled at Drayton Street High School. There were no buses for African American schools at that time, so he used what was available, pulp wood trucks, friends and whoever would give a ride toward the town of Newberry. Thank God for the late Louise Marshall Caldwell and her husband, the late L.C. (Big Bay) Caldwell and his pulp wood truck which served as transportation to and from school. He was a 1952 graduate of Drayton Street High School.
Later, he was drafted into the Army in 1952 during the Korean War and was trained at Fort Jackson and assigned to the Eight Army and Ninth Corp. After Korea he attended Allen University and moved to Samford, Connecticut. He retired from the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk.
Mr. Caldwell was a member of the Meridian Lodge # 9; former member of JC Copeland Consistory #361 and Past Commander in Chief; former member of Caro Temple #125 and former Deputy of District #4.
Those who celebrate his life and cherish precious and loving memories are five nephews, Wilbur Caldwell, Jr. of Newberry, SC, Ronnie and Rogdrick Caldwell of Columbia, SC, Melvin D. Caldwell (Jackie) of Charlotte, NC and Johnny Caldwell (Charlene) of Newberry, SC; three nieces, Toni Caldwell of Columbia, SC, Sandra Williams Caldwell and Eunice Johnson of Charlotte, NC; one sister-in-law, Bessie Caldwell of Newberry, SC; cousins, Ruby and Loraine of Charlotte, NC and J.C. Sondley of Newberry, SC.
Funeral service and burial will be conducted 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2016 at New Enoree Baptist Church, 190 Dover Lane, Newberry, SC (viewing one hour prior to the service).
