Mr. Sylvester "Danny Boy" BatesNovember 18, 1959 ~ August 11, 2017 (age 57)
Mr. Sylvester Bates, affectionately known as “Danny Boy” entered into Eternal Rest on Friday, August 11, 2017, at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC. Born in Prosperity, SC, he was the beloved son of the late Mr. Claude and Julia Mae Bates. Mr. Bates attended Mid-Carolina High School in Prosperity, SC. After high school, he worked in the industrial industry as a machine operator and was a dedicated employee of Kraft Foods for the past eight years.
When Mr. Bates was not working, his time was spent traveling through South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia to play profession pool. He was known by many as one of the best professional pool players in the South. Along with the game of pool, he was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan.
He became a member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church in Prosperity, SC, at an early age and attended alongside his father.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Kay Jones, in August 2017.
Those left to celebrate his life and cherish precious memories include his daughter, Kenyottia Gray Moorer (Michael) of Orangeburg, SC; one grandchild, Josana Alise Gray; one brother, Claude E. Bates of Newberry, SC; one sister, Shirley B. Scretchen of Ellenwood, GA; two surviving aunts, Mary Ellen Rikard and Vera G. Young of Newberry, SC; one brother-in-law, David Jones of Prosperity, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, including one devoted cousin, Dorothy Faye Bookman, and friends including one beloved and dedicated friend, Gloria Green; and a devoted coparent/ friend, Catherine Gray-Samuel.
The family will be receiving friends at the home (2416 Johnstone Street, Newberry, SC).
Funeral service and burial will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Shiloh A.M.E. Church in Prosperity, SC (viewing one hour prior to the service).
