Mrs. Carolyn D. Mays DeWalt fell asleep on March 26, 2017 . She was the youngest girl of seven, born to Adolphus Mays and Dora J. Murrell Mays Mills. She was born in Blakely, Ga on March 22, 1943. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Johnnie DeWalt Jr.—a courtship that developed on the job while living in Newark, NJ.
She was a woman of many talents. Some of her talents were the following: seamstress, hat maker, crocheter, quilter, cook, baker, artist, avid gardener, and fisher.
She retired as a Certified Nursing Assistant from White Oak Nursing Home.
She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1986—a life decision that surpassed all other achievements.
She leaves behind a devoted and loving daughter, Kathey D. Mays of the home and beloved granddaughter, Courtney J Mays Shippy of Charleston, SC; two sisters, Mamie R. Hubbard of Gary, Indiana and Petronia Lambert of East Orange, NJ; a brother, Ulysses Mills of Newark, NJ; a sister-in-law, Mabelle Mays of Viera, Fl; a great aunt, Zora Mays Hall of East Orange, NJ; predeceased by brothers, Jacob Mays, Billy E. Mays, and Lee Ozzie Mills. She is held in loving memory by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses (1907 Dixie Drive, Newberry, SC). Burial will follow in Werts Cemetery in Newberry.
