Ms. Lillie M. Wertz, 84, of 264 Brown Chapel Drive, Newberry, South Carolina entered into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC. Lillie, the fifth child of 13 children born to the late Mr. Thomas “Tobe” Werts and the late Mrs. Sallie Harris Werts, was born in Silverstreet, South Carolina on October 18, 1931.

 At an early age she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of Brown Chapel AME Church. She was active in Sunday school and served as a pianist for five years. After moving to Philadelphia, PA, she became a member of Resurrection Baptist Church. She continued to work out her soul’s salvation. During her 44 years at Resurrection Baptist Church, Lillie was active in many organizations. 

Lillie was a graduate of Drayton Street High School in Newberry, SC and also a graduate of Cushman PBX Business School in Philadelphia, PA.

Lillie was employed by Kraft Food Services for many years and later retired from Tasty Baking Company in 1990 after 25 years of service.

Lillie was a sweet, loving and caring person who was always willing to lend a helping hand to the elderly or anyone in need. She took time weekly to visit the nursing homes, friends and neighbors. She had many friends and touched many lives during her life. “Lillie believed in what was right”. One of her favorite expressions was “You’re either right or wrong. There is no place in between” She was never selfish and always generous in her giving.

Lillie had a very extensive social life. She loved to travel and had traveled all around the United States and made many trips abroad. Her favorite trip was made in 1972 to Jerusalem and The Holy Land. She had also traveled to Rome, Spain, Africa, Germany, Hawaii and many others.

Those who celebrate her life and cherish precious and loving memories are three sisters, Mildred Crump, Veronica Singleton (Calvin) and Sallie Cannon all of Newberry, SC; two brothers, George Wertz and Curtis Wertz (Ida) all of Newberry, SC; brother-in-law, Vernon Oxner of Columbia, SC; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including two devoted friends, Ida Ruff and Dorothy Flournoy.     

Funeral service and burial will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Brown Chapel AME Church, 1279 Brown Chapel Road, Newberry, SC.
