Mr. Calvin Thompson

December 22, 1939 ~ December 2, 2017 (age 77) 77 Years Old


Mr.  Calvin Thompson entered into eternal rest on December 2, 2017 at Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge Hospital in Columbia, SC. 

He was born in the Elmwood section of Philadelphia, PA on December 22, 1939.  He was the 13th of 15 children born to the late Mr. Charles Wallace Thompson, Sr. and the late Mrs. Catherine Helena Wood Thompson.   He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system.  After high school, he apprenticed in construction under his father.  He then became a professional meat-cutter and began Thompson’s Vending and Thompson’s Janitorial Service.  Upon moving to South Carolina, he continued Thompson’s Janitorial Service and became a school bus driver for Lexington/Richland School District 5 until his retirement. 

He was baptized at Beulah Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA at an early age and was an active member until moving to SC where joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chapin.  He served as a past Chairman of the Trustee Board for many years until he retired but maintained his duties as an active trustee.  He was a faithful church van driver and prided himself on helping to manage the upkeep of the church. 

He was an active member of Solid Rock #243 Masonic Lodge where he served as treasurer for many years until his passing.

He was preceded to heaven by his siblings Joseph Thompson, Charles Wallace Thompson, Jr., Levi Theodore Thompson, Sr., Eliezer Thompson, Alfred Thompson, Frank Thompson, Bertha Thompson, Mary Jane Gibson, Lucille Young, and Rosa Lee Thompson and son Barry Thompson.

He leaves behind to mourn:  his wife, Mrs. Thelma Miller Thompson of the home; his sons, Calvin (Tammy) Thompson, Jr. of Brick NJ, Marc Thompson of Asbury Park, NJ, and Roosevelt Sharperson, Jr.  of Philadelphia, PA; his daughters, Trenia Bowers of West Columbia, SC,  Shirley (Mark) Miller-Baldwin,  Jacqueline (Maceo) Hood and Robin Jones, all of Philadelphia, PA;  his sisters, Lenora Ramsey of the home, Florence Reid of Jersey City, NJ,  Marcella Edmunds and  Daisey Carter of Philadelphia, PA; brother-in-law, Edward Miller of Washington, DC; sisters-in-law, Mildred Knightner of Columbia, SC Naomi Thompson of Superior Township, MI and Rosa Thompson of Chester, PA;  15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, devoted friend Sylvesta Bowers, Sr. of Little Mountain, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends who will continue to carry on his legacy.

The family will receive friends at the home (301 Lazybrook Drive, Chapin, SC).

The family will recieve friends at the funeral home from 5:30 p.m - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2017.

Funeral service and burial will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2017 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chapin, SC (viewing one hour prior to the service).
