Apostle Sherwood L. Evans, 79; husband of Dian Davis Evans. Apostle Evans made his transition into eternity on Sunday, May 24, 2026, surrounded by his wife and niece Michelle at the Jesse Frank Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry.
Born on January 23, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA, he was reared in Ware Shoals, SC. He attended local schools in that area, graduating from Sanders High School in 1965. Later that year, he returned to PA, where he obtained employment with Lionel Richard's as his road manager and driver. After several years of traveling with the Commodores, he returned home again.
He is predeceased by his father, Mr. George Cromwell; his stepfather, Mr. Edward Evans; and his mother, Mrs. Katie Jordan Evans. Born the first child of nine, he is predeceased by five brothers: Jimmy, Alfonso, Isaac, Ed, and Kavin; two sisters, Shirley Frances Jones and Ophelia Richardson; and his only son, Sherwood Evans Jr.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Dian, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Rhonda Scales of Houston, Texas; a brother, Mr. Carol Wayne Evans of Waterloo, SC; three stepdaughters: Ms. Andrea Cureton of Greenville, SC, Mrs. Barbara Battle Jackson of Silverstreet, SC, and Ms. Wardenia Graham of Newberry; three stepsons: Mr. Mark Graham of Newark, NJ, Mr. Michael Graham of Norristown, PA, and Mr. Eleon Graham of the home; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-great-grandchildren, including Sage Turner, whom he loved deeply. He is also survived by a very special person, his cousin, Mr. Leon Linthicum of Philadelphia, PA; nieces Vareva Harris of Columbia, SC, Valandrea Jones of Enoree, SC, Tracey Sampson of Belton, SC, Cashmere Evans of Ware Shoals, SC, Michelle Evans of Simpsonville, SC, Rochelle Evans Williams of Simpsonville, SC, Whitney Evans of Simpsonville, SC, and Otelia Evans of Greenwood, SC; nephews Ed Evans of Dew West, SC, Aaron Evans of High Point, NC, Andric Evans of Columbia, SC, Richard Miller of Greenwood, SC, Isaiah Boozer of Chicago, IL Trevor Evans of Woodruff, SC, and Alton Evans; as well as other cousins, nieces, and nephews who will all miss him deeply.
Visitation will be held from 1-5 pm on Friday, May 29, 2026, at Wilson Funeral Home in Newberry, SC.
Funeral service will be conducted 11am Saturday, May 30, 2026, St. Matthew Baptist Church in Newberry, SC.
Interment will follow at Werts Cemetery in Newberry, SC.
