Carrie Garrett Obituary

Carrie Chaplin Garrett passed away on July 2, 2024, at the age of 90. Carrie was born on November 27, 1933, in Newberry, South Carolina, to the late Calvin Eugene Chaplin and Estelle Alston Chaplin. She was known as "Honey" to her family and friends. She was the last daughter of six siblings, Mattie Hampton, Azilee Williams, Silas Chaplin, Roland Chaplin, and Albert Chaplin.

The family moved from Newberry to Bennettsville, SC when she was nine years old and she went on to attend Marlboro H.S. in Bennettsville. After high school Carrie went to South Carolina State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Her dream was to go into the military to become a pilot and to be the First Black Woman Astronaut. She always told her children, " while it is important to have ambition, always  shoot for the stars, even though it is okay if you land on the moon".

After college, Carrie moved to Brooklyn, NY, where she met her husband Harvey Lee Garrett who was a graduate of North Carolina State University. The pair met while she was working at Maimonides Hospital and soon married.  Afterwards, they moved to Danbury, Connecticut where they raised three wonderful children: Jacqueline, Harvey Jr., and Veronica. While in Connecticut, Carrie worked at Danbury Hospital. The family returned to Brooklyn, NY.; Carrie changed careers. She went on to work for the City of New York Human Resource Administration Social Services as an investigator  for 42 years. Carrie retired honorably at the age of 80.

Carrie was a woman of integrity. She believed in hard work, consistency and honesty. She was a quiet and private person who never liked to be the center of attention. She focused on running her household with strict principles and dedication to her family. She was very humble and very supportive. Carrie enjoyed many things. She enjoyed the church. She enjoyed different kinds of music especially Gospel and artists like Nat King Cole and Lou Rawls. She also enjoyed watching old western movies (what we used to call "shoot-em-up, bang-bang" movies, like Shane and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) with her family.

She is survived by her brother Roland Chaplin and his spouse Ojetta Chaplin; her three children Jacqueline, Harvey Jr., and Veronica Garrett; her four grandchildren, Jamel Garrett, Sharita Williams, Lue Williams Jr., and Zaria Garrett; nephew and nieces Luther C. Williams Jr., Kenneth Hampton and his spouse Brenda Hampton, Phyllis Hampton, and Christina Hampton; and a host of great nephews and nieces, cousins and friends.
