Councilman Thomas Boyd, Sr. Obituary

Councilman Thomas Louis Boyd, Sr., entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Agape Hospice House of the Midlands in Columbia, SC. He was born in Newberry, SC, on January 1, 1943, to the late Mr. Murriel Boyd, Sr., and the late Mrs. Mattie Wilson Boyd.

He attended the public schools of Newberry County and graduated from Gallman High School Class of 1962. He furthered his education at the American Institute of Banking becoming certified for Bank Management in 1977. He attended Kingsborough Community College becoming a Real Estate Broker in 1988, then earned his 7A Administrator Certificate from the City of New York (H.P.D.) in 1989, became a Licensed Real Estate Broker for the State of New York in 1990, became a Certified Mentor from Piedmont Technical College in 2001, Certified Middle School (F.A.S.T.) Trainer from Alliance for Children and Families in 2003, and became a Certified Grant Writer with The National Grant Writers Associates in 2003. Councilman Boyd was a member of several boards including Newberry County Council on Aging, Community Assistance Provider (C.A.P.), Newberry County Literacy Council and Piedmont Technical College Board of Visitors. He was also a member of the Penny Sales Tax, Joint Zone Planning and Parks and Recreation Commissions, as well as a South Carolina Notary Public from 2001 until his death. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Newberry, SC. He retired from the Bankers Trust Company as an assistant manager. He was previously a Councilman for the City of Newberry, District #5, for thirteen years, a Coordinator for Community-inSchools where he managed and supervised after-school programs, President/CEO of Boyd and Associates, Legal Assistant to Attorney Mitchell N. Kay and a member of the O’Neal Church Men’s Club.

He was predeceased by two sons, Thomas Louis Boyd, Jr., and Martin T. Boyd, Sr.; two grandsons, Martin T. Boyd, Jr., and Terry Boyd; and eight brothers, James O. Boyd, Murriel Boyd, Jr., Reverend Brady Boyd, Leroy Boyd, L.C. Brown, Johnnie B. Brown, Frankie Brown and O’Dell Boyd.

Those who celebrate his life and cherish precious and loving memories include his wife, Mrs. Narvis Sligh Boyd of the home; one daughter-in-law, Minister Tina Belton Pittman of Newberry, SC; two sisters, Verdia Wise (Ellis) and Rosa B. Baxter of Newberry, SC; one brother-in-law, Andrew Long of Newberry, SC; three sisters-in-law, Mamie Boyd, Annie Bell Boyd and Linda Long all of Newberry, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends

The family will receive friends at the home (1615 Vincent Street, Newberry).

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1501 College Street, Newberry. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
