Mr. George Rufus Wertz, age 83, the son of the late Thomas & Sallie Wertz, was born on June 14, 1941, in Newberry, SC. He entered eternal rest on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the home with his daughter Sharon Moon in Little Mountain, SC.
He attended Newberry County School, graduated from Gallman High School in 1959. He joined Brown Chapel A.M.E Church at an early age. He enjoyed traveling, riding and listening to music. He was well known for his pleasant smile and his charming personality that touched many hearts.
George Rufus Wertz proudly served in the US Army and US Air Force. His military career took him to various parts of the world. Where he earned numerous commendations for his service.
He was predeceased in death by one daughter; Jewel Jones, sisters; Lula Mae Rainer, Ozzie Lee Goggans, Lillie Wertz, Estelle Oxner, Doris Plummer, brothers; Thomas Wertz, Willie Davidson, Haskel Wertz.
Mr. George Rufus Wertz legacy is carried on by five daughters; Jacqueline Lewis (Jerry), Audrey Wertz, Veronica Spearman (Terry), Kisha Wertz and Sharon Moon (Norman), four sons; George Wertz Jr., Stanley Gilmore, Michael Wilson, and Jason Yarborough, three sisters; Mildred Crump, Veronica Singleton (Calvin), and Sallie Cannon, one brother; Curtis Wertz (Ida), one brother-in-law Vernon Oxner; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and a host of many other relatives and friends who mourn his transition.
Visitation will be held 1-5pm Wednesday May 7, 2025, Wilson Funeral Home Newberry, SC
Funeral Service will be conducted 1pm Thursday May 8, 2025, Brown Chapel AME Church Newberry, SC.
Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
