For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
Romans 8:38-39
Malverse Lane Jr. was born in Pomaria, South Carolina, on February 7, 1944. He was the fourth of ten children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Malverse and Arleatha Lane. In his early years, Malverse (often called “Jr.”) was known to be a hard-working and determined child, and he received his early education in Newberry County. Throughout childhood, he attended both St. Mark A.M.E. Church and Fellowship Baptist Church.
His early sense of determination led Malverse to migrate to New York City in 1961. Two years later, he married his kindergarten sweet-heart Annette and fathered his two daughters, Bridgett and Shawn. Malverse possessed a strong sense of ambition which allowed him to establish his career with the New York City Transit Authority’s Revenue Department in the early 1970s. His many years of dedication and excellence culminated with his ultimate promotion to Assistant Chief of the NYC Transit Authority. He was known to many through this for his exceptional leadership, astuteness, intelligence and personality. His successful career as Assistant Chief continued on until his retirement in 1999. Malverse’s love and commitment to his family eventually called him to return home to South Carolina in 2001.
His life was highlighted not only by his achievements, but also by his devotion and selflessness toward his family. Affectionately called “Daddy Jr.” by his grandchildren, Malverse left an indelible impression on their lives and impacted the shaping of their character. To them, he was known for his strong presence, willingness to help and often candid sense of humor. Daddy Jr. was a man who lived with high standards, expected excellence and lived by the notion of working smarter, not harder. Most notably, he was known for his overwhelming generosity and desire to help those around him, in both big and small ways. Anyone who knew him could see that Malverse was truly one of a kind.
Malverse is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annette Lane (December 2023) and brother Colie Jackson Lane (October 2011).
Malverse is loved and survived by his two daughters: Bridgett (Lindsay) Walton of Irmo, SC and Shawn (Will) Smith of Chapin, SC; eight grandchildren: Aaron (Krystal) Walton of Columbia, SC; Ashley (Trevor) Gantt of Dallas, TX; Paul (Kyra) Walton of Columbia, SC; Monty Phillip of Columbia, SC; Lindsay (Roman) Blount of Chapin, SC; Oshajuan Phillip of Columbia, SC; Gabriel Phillip of Columbia, SC; and Kyle Clark of Charlotte, NC; and eight siblings: Shellie (Domingo) Rodriguez of Brooklyn, NY; Margarite (Johnny) Graham of Newberry, SC; Annie Lee Bryant of Brooklyn, NY; Abdullah (Elaine) El-Amin of Pomaria, SC; Samuel Earl (June) Lane of Richmond, VA; Raymond Leroy (Betty) Lane of New Brunswick, NJ; Jackie Robinson (Charline) Lane of Pomaria, SC; and Linda Marie (Hilton) Tribble of Pomaria, SC.
