It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, for part of us went with you, the afternoon God called you home.
On May 15, 1961, in Newberry, SC, Maggie Mathis Baxter and the late Richard Baxter Sr. were blessed with a precious son. This precious one was given the name Richard Baxter Jr, affectionately known as Sam. His beautiful life came to a peaceful end on August 20, 2021 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Sam was a member of Renwick Grove Baptist Church. He attended the public schools of Newberry County and graduated from Newberry High class of 1978. He was an excellent student and an exceptional baseball player. He also loved playing for the Newberry Allstars. After high school, Sam was employed with Oakland Mills, Newberry County Council of Aging, and Morris Furniture. Sam was predeceased by a grandson, Armon Dequan Wright; his maternal grandparents Leroy Mathis and Nellie Werts Mathis; paternal grandparents Thomas Gary and Maggie Baxter Dewalt; an uncle, Raymond Baxter; two aunts, Catherine Fant Gilliam and Wilhelmina Baxter Anderson. Cherishing his memories are his son, Richard Baxter III; three beautiful daughters, Brandy Mathis, Shaina Baxter-Fuller, and Ashley Basnight; eight precious grandchildren, Taiveon J. S. Elmore, Kennedi J. Trapp, Sariyah A. Baxter, Aamya K. Wright, LeyAnna N. Fuller, Jalen L. Fuller, Allundria N. Vance, and Brentley A. Greenwood; two brothers, O’Brian G. Baxter and Jermaine L. Baxter; two beautiful sisters Jacqueline Baxter Singley (Ray) and Sharon Baxter Boyce (James); an uncle; four aunts; five nephews; three nieces; a great nephew; a great niece; and a host of cousins and friends, including devoted cousins’Anthony Gilliam, Johnny Nance, Dennis Mathis; devoted friends’ Larry Cook, Joe Maybin, and Michael Boyd.

Visitation Tuesday August 24, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Wilson Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held 12:00 pm Wednesday August 25, 2021 at Renwick Grove Baptist Church.
