Mrs. Betty Jane Mayers Barber entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at her residence. She was born in Chapin, SC, on May 15, 1937, to the late Mr. Isreal Mayers, Sr., and the late Mrs. Alberta Naomi Bowers Mayers.
At an early age, she joined Mount Zion Baptist Church and was a faithful member until her health declined. She served on the Pulpit Aid, was a member of the Usher Board, Senior Choir and the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Woman’s Home Aid Society Lodge #97.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joe Louis Barber; two brothers, Tyrone and Johnny Mayers; two sisters, Hearlean Mayers and Pearlean Bates; and a stepson, Joe Louis Curry.
Those who celebrate her life and cherish precious and loving memories include two daughters, Vivian Louise Sulton and Joann Sims of Chapin, SC; two stepsons, Palmer Curry of Irmo, SC, and Larry Cunningham of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren, Brenda H. Weeks (Mark) of Lexington, SC, Lucretia B. Hook of West Columbia, SC, Darrell M. Sims, Denzel O. Sims and Paul E. Sulton, Jr., of Chapin, SC; eleven great-grandchildren; five brothers, Charles B. Mayers, Isreal Mayers, Jr. (Melinda), Oneal Mayers (Constance), Larry Mayers, Bennie Mayers (Wyman) of Chapin, SC; three sisters, Ann Stevens (Barnett) of Chapin, SC, Judy Williams (Milton) of Prosperity, SC, and Hazel Stokes (Walter) of Irmo, SC; one aunt, Susie Mayers of Chapin, SC; and a host of nieces with special recognition of niece, Jackie Boyd for the special love and care she always gave; two nieces reared in the home, Alicia Trapp (Kendrick) and Shanikquah Bates; nephews, cousins and friends including a devoted longtime friend, Kathleen Boyd.
The family will receive friends at the home, 129 Mountain Drive, Chapin.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 110 Broomstraw Road in Chapin, SC 29036. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
