Mrs. Betty Ann Free Mathis, a beloved mother, 71, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 Magnolia Manor of Greenwood, SC. She was born in Newberry, SC on July 23, 1947 to the late Ms. Mattie Ruff and the late Mr. Clifton Free.
Mrs. Mathis was a loving childcare provider and touched many lives and hearts during her many endeavors in life.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Mathis, Jr.; a devoted life partner, James Alston; brothers, Matthew “Red” Free and Hoover Bishop; and nephew, Curtis Free.
Those who celebrate her life and cherish precious and loving memories include three daughters, Beatrice Gray and Betty Mathis, both of Newberry, SC and Carrie Wilder (Antonio) of Roebuck, SC; six grandchildren, KaCherish Mathis, Talican Gray, Quinton Gray, Jr., Amaria Mathis, Tamera Mathis, all of Newberry, SC and Morgan Wilder of Roebuck, SC; brother, Clarence Free of Suitland, Maryland; sister, Ida Johnson of Newbery, SC; four brothers-in-law, Alexander Johnson, Sr., Clyde Mathis, Ronnie Mathis and Timothy Mathis, all of Newberry, SC; sister-in-law, Laura Mathis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Beatrice Gray (145 Fox Briar Court, Newberry, SC).
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Saint Matthew Baptist Church, 61 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC (viewing one hour prior to the service). Burial will follow in Werts Cemetery in Newberry.
