Mrs. Sandra Louise Patterson Rutherford, beloved wife, sister, grandmother, and friend transitioned peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the age of 73, surrounded by her loving family at Prisma Health Heart Hospital. She was born on April 20, 1950, in Chapin, SC to the late Samuel and Willie Mae Reaves Patterson.
Sandra was educated in the public schools of Lexington County. She was a 1968 graduate of Richlex School in Irmo, SC.
Sandra joined St. John AME Church in Chapin, SC at an early age. She was a loyal member who loved her church and attended service faithfully until recently when her health declined. She dutifully served as church secretary for over 40 years and was a member of the church choir. She was also a member of the Women Home Aid Society.
Over the years, she held various positions ranging from a circulation assembler at the Newberry Observer to a healthcare worker at Lowman Home and Southside Residential Care. She retired in 2004 to dedicate her time to her all-time favorite position, being a grandmother. She was a devoted caretaker for her grandchildren and many godchildren from infancy until they reached school age.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters - Mary Tanner, Wilhemina Jackson, Lillie Bell Wise, Henrietta O’Kane and brothers - Joe Edward Patterson, John Patterson, Cleveland Martin, & David Martin.
She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her devoted husband of 47 years, David L. Rutherford; two daughters, Monica R. Patterson, of Columbia, SC, and Alisha D. Rutherford, of Newberry, SC; two sons, Vincent L. (Shirley) Brooks, Sr. of Pomaria, SC and Anthony L. Cromer, of Newberry, SC; four sisters, Rozina Javis and Cora L. Johnson, both of Columbia, SC; Elizabeth Patterson of Hopkins, SC, and Georgia Gallman of Little Mountain, SC; one brother, Samuel O. Patterson, Sr. of Chapin, SC; five sisters-in-law, Mary R. Chapman, of Columbia, SC, Bessie (Richard) Bookman, Annie M. Rutherford, Glenise C. Rutherford, all of Newberry, SC and Shirley B. Rutherford, of Pomaria, SC; two brothers-in- law, Jeffie A. Rutherford, of Pomaria, SC and Donald (Elizabeth) Rutherford, of Prosperity, SC; ten grandchildren, Cennedi, Cassidi, Camrin, Keiston, Shiniqua (Marion), LaPrincia, Vincent Jr. (Shandora), London, Jack, & Jill; six great grandchildren, Trace, Cree, Brooklyn, Tripp, Lauren, & Amari Grace; four godchildren, Aja, Ivy, Dexter, & Milette; devoted friends, Linda Lyles, Rebecca Hodges, Yvonne Tucker, & Catherine Chaplin, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will all miss her dearly.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the parlor of Wilson Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sandra Rutherford will be conducted on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 1:00 pm in the sanctuary of St. John AME Church, 102 Broomstraw Rd, Chapin, SC 29036.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
