Helen Delores Allen Cannon-Smith, 77, transitioned from labor to reward on April 9th, 2022 in Lumberton, NC. She was born on December 18th, 1944 in Richland County, SC to Earnest Allen and Evelyn Boyd Gantt.
Helen grew up in Chapin SC, were she attended school in the Chapin School District. After working many jobs, she decided that she find her true passion, that was helping others who couldn't care for themselves. A new life and exciting career began for her. She began working as a Private Duty Nurse, after some years of doing that, she went on to obtain her Home Health Aide Certification at Bestcare Nursing School, NY. She worked in many facilities and homes taking care of patient's and their families.
She enjoyed singing, writing music, drawing and horses. Helen would later grow up to become a beautiful young lady evolving in and through life. She had lots of success and accomplishments throughout her life. Helen loved her family unconditionally, she would call everyone all the time, just to say I love you and laugh and tell you all about our family and our history. Helen knew it all, when it came to that. To know her was to love her. And her smile, none like it, simply beautiful!
Helen joined First Baptist Church, Far Rockaway, NY and served on many boards at her Church. This is when she discovered her calling. She was ordained as a Missionary in 1995. She would later move from NY and return home to SC, where she could be closer to her sisters and family.
Helen was preceded in death by her Father Earnest Allen and Mother Evelyn Boyd Gantt, her 1st Husband Alverse Andrew Cannon, Three Sisters, Ms. Jackie Pought, Ms. Minnie Gantt, and Ms. Doris Gallashaw. One beloved Son, Luis Cannon, One beloved Daughter, Gloria Cannon, and Three beloved Grandsons, Tommy Cannon, James Cannon and Vincent Cannon.
Helen is survived by her spouse Richard Smith, NY. Her children, Diane Taylor (Michael) KS. Malverse Cannon (Traci), NC. Mary Cannon, PA, Andrew Cannon (Jackie), NJ. Robert Cannon II, SC. James Cannon (Jackie), NY. Joseph Cannon, NJ. Adopted son/grandson James Cannon, SC, Her Brother, Jessie Goodman (Diane) of Camden, NJ. Five Sisters, Charlesina Gantt of Newberry, SC, Joann Bowers (Stanley) of Little Mountain, SC, Sadie Gantt of Lexington, SC, Lorraine Speight of Durham, NC, and Brenda Gantt of Little Mountain, SC; One Uncle, Frank Bynum (Melvin) of Chapin, SC, Three Aunts, Celustine Benson (Lewis) of Little Mountain, SC, Althea Clarkson of Little Mountain, SC, Marylnn Kelly of Little Mountain, SC, One Brother in law Haskell Ray Cannon, One Sister-in-law, Enda Williams; 43 Grandchildren, and a host of Great & Great-Great Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and other loved ones. A very special friend Remos Prather of Florence, SC. Two Sister's in Christ; Sister Alice and Sis Josie of Far Rockaway, NY.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, April 24, 2022 from 1 to 7 pm at Wilson Funeral Home, 64 Boundary St, Newberry, SC 29108.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Monday, April 25, 2022 at 1 pm at the Newberry Firehouse Conference Center, 1227 McKibben St, Newberry, SC 29108.
Interment will follow in Werts Cemetery.
The cortege will leave the funeral home at 12:15 pm.
