Ms. Joyce Brown McCorvey

A Time to Be Born:  Joyce Belinda Brown McCovey the eldest of the late James Luther Brown Sr., the late Annie Mae Brown, and the older sister of the late James Luther Brown, Jr. was born and reared in Newberry, South Carolina,

A Time to Serve:  She accepted Christ as her personal Savior early in life and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church in Newberry, SC. She continued to exercise her faith as a devoted member of Zion Hope Primitive Baptist while residing in Pensacola, FL until relocating to her hometown of Newberry, SC.

Her early education was in the public schools of Newberry, South Carolina. She attended and graduated from Gallman High School in Newberry, South Carolina. She continued her education at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education. While at South Carolina State, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Following her graduation from South Carolina State University, she attended Florida State University, where she earned a Master’s in Education Administration.

She began her career as an elementary teacher in Greenville, South Carolina. She later became the Director of Special Education in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Joyce continued her career with the Florida Department of Education. She would complete her career as the Director of Alternative Academy Programs. A highlight of her career was being selected as a fellow for the U.S. Department of Education under U.S.  Secretary of Education, Dick Riley.  

A Time to Die:  In accordance with God’s will, on Monday December 19, 2022, Joyce was called home to God.

A Time to Mourn: Precious memories remain with those who loved Joyce and the many lives she touched. She leaves to cherish her memories one sister Beverly Chapman (Melvin) of Newberry, SC and one aunt, Lessie Pearl Clark of Newberry, SC and a host of nieces and nephews including devoted, dedicated nieces and nephew Andrea Tucker (Rodrick) of Columbia, SC Allison Chapman, and Melvin Chapman Jr. (Abriana) of Roswell, GA. A devoted caregiver (Shirley Wise), a devoted friend (Alvena Goudelock), and numerous cousins.

Homegoing Services for Ms. Joyce Brown McCorvey will be conducted on Friday, December 23, 2022 at 1:00 PM in the sanctuary of Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1501 College St. Newberry, SC 29108.

Interment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Because of Covid 19 and the Flu, the family will not be receiving visitors at their home.
