Our hearts are heavy for the loss of Nathaniel Mayes, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, who left us far too soon. Nathaniel, whose warmth, kindness, and laughter touched everyone he met, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at the age of 62.
Nathaniel was born February 27, 1962, in Newberry, SC to the late Lillie Crump Mayes and the late Willis Mayes, Jr.
Nathaniel lived a life full of passion, creativity, and unwavering love for those around him. He was a devoted son and brother whose strength and guidance shaped our lives in countless ways.
Nathaniel’s love for football (favorite team, Pittsburgh Steelers) basketball (favorite team San Antonio Spurs), softball and had a strong interest, in cooking and grilling. He had a love for a variety of music Gospel and R&B. Another great passion of his was helping others, especially the elderly.
Nathaniel attended the public schools of Newberry County. He had employment with Greenwood Mills, American Fiber & Finishing, Kraft Foods, Fruit of the Loom (Renfro Socks) and PL Development. He joined Belmont Baptist Church at an early age.
Nathaniel was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Larry and a sister Sarah.
He is survived by other family members, Brothers: Willis Mayes, III and Porterfield Mayes (Norma). Sisters: Debra Mayes-Gamble, Shirley Johnson (Charlie) and Delores Pitts (Leonard).
Nathaniel leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a wide circle of friends who will miss him deeply.
Nathaniel’s memory will live on in our hearts, reminding us to cherish each moment and love one another fiercely. He will forever remain a source of inspiration for all who knew him.
Rest in peace, dear brother Nathaniel—you will always be loved and never forgotten.
Visitation will be held 12-1pm Saturday December 28, 2024, Wilson Funeral Home.
A celebration of Nathaniel's life will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 1:30pm at Belmont Baptist Church in Silverstreet. SC.
