On Thursday, January 20, 2025, Pettis Phelan Chick departed this life into the hands of the Almighty. Pettis was born July 30, 1968, in Newberry, South Carolina, the third of four children to Ruth and Clarence Chick. Pettis was educated in Newberry County Public Schools at Spear Street Elementary and Gallman Middle School. During middle school, Pettis was a member of the Newberry Police Explorer Post under the mentorship of Officer Boyce Lively. Pettis graduated from Newberry High School, class of 1986.
As a student at Newberry High School, Pettis excelled in football and baseball earning an athletic scholarship to Chowan University, Murfreesboro, N.C. for football. As a freshman, Pettis started as guard and long snapper for Chowan until sidelined by an injury during his sophomore season. Following his career at Chowan, Pettis began a career in law enforcement with the Newberry Police Department graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Following a career in law enforcement, Pettis became a small business owner in Newberry.
Pettis was a cancer survivor. Many would see Pettis on his daily early morning walks to keep himself healthy. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan who wore shorts every day even during the coldest days. He loved fishing with his son Seth on the Saluda River. He loved hip-hop, old- school rap and when he put on his comedian’s hat, everyone was fair game. Ultimately, the three things he loved most were his family, the mother of his son and football.
Pettis was proceeded in death by his father, Dr. Clarence A. Chick, maternal grandparents Clarence and Viola Davis and paternal grandparents Pettis and Janie Chick. He is survived by one son, Pettis Seth Chick of Bluffton, S.C., sisters Dr. Arva Davidson (Bruce) Newport News, VA; Ezma Chick, Columbia, S.C.; and Vince (Jack) Lincoln, NE.; one niece Logan Douglas, San Antonio, Tx, nephews, Adam Hunter, Richmond, VA, Reed Douglas, Los Angeles, CA, Evan Douglas, Cincinnati, OH and Cole Douglas, New York, NY. and a host of relatives in the Davis, Chick, Hunter, Trapp, and Sanders families.
Funeral Services will be Conducted 1pm Wednesday February 5, 2025, St. Matthew Baptist Church Newberry, SC.
Interment will follow at Newberry Memorial Gardens Newberry, SC.
