Mr. David Lewis Wertz

Mr. David Lewis Wertz, affectionately known as “Popa Man”, was born in Newberry County, South Carolina, on February 27, 1947, the son of the late Jordan and Odessa Bertha Wertz. He entered into Eternal Rest on Friday, January 6, 2017.

He was a member of Trinity A.M.E. Church in Newberry, SC.

Two sisters, Addie M. Wertz and Brenda E. Wertz, preceded him to Heaven.

Mr. Wertz was educated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania School System and Benjamin Franklin

High School. He was known for his boxing talent in the Joe Frazier Gym in Philadelphia, PA. Later, he moved to Woonsocket, Rhode Island where he was employed as a construction worker for many years. Afterwards, he moved back to Newberry, SC where he helped build schools in Newberry County. He had a passion for sports.

Those who celebrate his life and cherish precious and loving memories include four children, David Johnson, April Andres Ford, Sorran Ford and Dietra McCain; grandchildren; one sister, Ida Mae Wilson Gallman; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.

Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Wilson Funeral Home. (viewing one hour prior to the service).
