Mr. William Edward Wheeler, Sr., affectionately known as “Ed”, was born April 20, 1931, in Little Mountain, South Carolina, to the late Minnie Lee Curry Wheeler and the late Mr. Julius “Bill” Mayers. He was also reared in the home by his step father, the late Mr. Handy Wheeler. Ed departed this earthly life on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center, “WARRIOR'S WALK” Hospice Unit, in Columbia, South Carolina.

Ed attended Newberry County Schools and later he continued his education in the Culinary Arts at Denmark Technical College in Denmark, South Carolina.

He served in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War as a Radio Telephone Operator, Cannoneer and Truck Driver.

At an early age, Ed was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chapin, South Carolina, and served as a Trustee until his health declined.

Ed enjoyed listening to quartet gospel singing, fashion and sports, especially baseball and fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

Three daughters, Vashti Wheeler, Olivia Wheeler, Gwendolyn Carter, and two brothers, Eathion Mayers and James Rufus Mayers, preceded him to Heaven.

He leaves to cherish his precious and loving memories his loving and devoted wife, Viola Louise Williams of 36 years; five daughters: Claudia Wheeler of Little Mountain, SC, Joanne Carter of Columbia, SC, Elaine Wheeler of Newark, NJ, Sheila Williams of Newberry, SC and Shari Williams of Little Mountain, SC; five sons, Lamont Wheeler (Thelma), William Edward Wheeler, Jr. and Jerry Wheeler, all of Columbia SC; Sherman Williams (Tracy) and James Kenneth Williams, both of Newberry, SC; 35 grandchildren; and a host of greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Hayward R. “Hank” Mayers (Regina) of Cleveland, Ohio and Charles Mayers of Elizabeth, NJ; one sister, Annie Mae Mayers of Montclair, NJ; one aunt, Mrs. Betty Lee Mayers of Little Mountain, SC; five sisters-in-law, Bessie Alice Mayers of Elizabeth, NJ, Maudine Mayers of Graniteville, SC, Josephine Scarborough of Treherneville, VA, Roberta Williams (Billy) of Charlotte, NC and Elizabeth Williamson (Willie) of Greenwood, SC; two brothers-in-law, Robert Williams (Josephine) of Newberry, SC and Cleophus Williams (Charlene) of Edgefield, SC; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will be receiving friends at the home (922 B. Suber Drive, Newberry, SC).

Funeral service will be conducted 12:00 noon on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, (110 Broomstraw Road, Chapin, SC 29036). Burial will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery (4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229).
